Phase 1 – Interviews with Board Members
Early Insights from Opportunity Areas Board Members
As part of our process evaluation of the Opportunity Areas programme, we are in Phase 1 of our fieldwork, which involves conducting in-depth interviews with board members from across all 12 Opportunity Areas. These conversations are helping us to understand, from those most closely involved, how the programme was delivered, what worked and what perhaps didn’t, and what lessons should be carried forward.
Who we are speaking to and why?
Each Opportunity Area was guided by a local partnership board which brought together school leaders, local authorities, community organisations, businesses and employers. Board members were recruited for their knowledge, networks, and ability to influence change. Their insights are invaluable for uncovering the realities of delivering place-based education interventions…like the Opportunity Areas. Since the start of April, we have spoken to numerous Independent Chairs and Board members, representing all 12 Opportunity Areas.
What are we learning so far?
Since the start of April, we have been conducting interviews that are revealing a rich picture of variation across the 12 Opportunity Areas. Participants are shedding light on how boards were formed, the different ways they worked together, the challenges they faced, and the kinds of initiatives that they championed. They are also offering early reflections on the programme’s impact and legacy, which we will be exploring in more detail later in the project.
What’s next?
In Phase 2, our research will move into schools within selected Opportunity Areas to explore how the programme was implemented and delivered on the ground, as well as to explore any long-lasting impacts. We are grateful to all of the board members who have shared their experiences so far, helping to shape our evaluation and contribute to the wider conversation on creating equitable opportunities for young people.
